While you can snorkel in many locations on the Big Island of Hawaii, undoubtedly, the best snorkeling on the island is in Kealakekua Bay near the Captain Cook monument. The water is clear and usually calm and the area is teaming with very colorful tropical fish of all varieties. While you can access the bay from the south side, high cliffs prevent access on the north side near the monument. You can rent a canoe and paddle across or sign up for a snorkeling tour with one of a handful of tour operators such as Fairwinds II or Body Glove to be taken on a snorkeling excursion. Personally, we prefer the Fairwinds Tour since their equipment is great, they spend quality time at great moorings in the bay and the food is excellent and abundant but any snorkeling excursion to this great location is bound to please!

Night Time View of the Lava Flow
If you plan to visit the island of Hawaii, affectionately known as “the Big Island,” be sure to take a trip to the south of the island to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to see the current eruption of Pu’u ‘O’o as it spews forth and sends a river of hot, molten, lava to the sea. This eruption has been constant since 1983, making it the longest flowing eruption in Hawaiian history. You can get a good view of the steaming eruption inside Kilauea Caldera from either the deck of Volcano House or the viewing platform from Jagger Museum and Observatory.
If you intend to visit the Big Island of Hawaii, you will most likely fly into the Kona-Keahole International Airport. After picking up your luggage you can catch the tram to your rental car and make your way north to the Kohala Coast along Hwy 19 to the resort areas where you have probably booked your accommodations. Along the Kohala coast, you will find an outstanding selection of upscale hotels complete with fantastic golfing, dining, sunning and swimming. You can also take some time to visit the town of Kailua-Kona for some excellent meals, fun shopping and great ocean views.
